HR INFO

 Welcome to 6th Grade!

I am so very excited about this new school year and hope that you are as well!

This year, you will be taking on new responsibilities and learning how to stay organized while switching classes between our three 6th grade teachers. I know you can do it! I am always here to help!
It’s going to be a great year. Remember, a positive attitude and hard work go a long way on the road to success.

In the pages that follow I have explained a few questions that are often asked and spelled out some procedures that are often misunderstood. If you have further questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.

Thank you and I hope that you have a wonderful year!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Zumwalt

Assignments

Assignments are often completed on loose leaf paper and written in pencil with the students’ name, number, and the date in the top, right corner of the paper. I strongly encourage students to write in cursive as much as possible. Students are specifically asked to print words on Spelling tests and when filling in words on maps. Assignments are due the next class period unless told otherwise by the teacher.

Behavior

Good, positive behavior is expected at all times. We do use the BIST behavior strategy. If are unsure of the method, it is well defined in the student handbook. Students should always act responsibly and respectfully toward everyone. In the classroom, we expect that your child will raise his/her hand before speaking and before leaving his/her seat. Students should demonstrate good listening skills when others are speaking by not talking. This is of utmost importance when the morning announcements are on as there is often needed information for us to hear.
Students will be given ONE verbal reminder of inappropriate or unacceptable behavior. If the behavior continues the student will be sent to the safe seat. After three moves to the safe seat in one quarter, parent notification will be made.

Birthday Treats

Birthday treats are welcome during our homeroom time at 1:40pm. Please let us know a day in advance before sending treats so that we may plan to allow time for the celebration. Refrigerated or frozen treats need to be brought to the office just before 1:40pm as we do not have room to keep them. TREATS MUST ALSO BE STORE BOUGHT AND INDIVIDUALLY PACKAGED.

Contact Information

Kate Zumwalt

E-mail address: kzumwalt@stpeterjc.org

Please remember that the best way to reach us is by e-mail. Although we do have voicemail, it is not our preferred method of communication. Responses to questions will be answered in a more timely fashion via e-mail.

Expectations

Coming into sixth grade, I expect that children have the ability to write in complete sentences with correct capitalization and punctuation. Students should also be neat in their work and utilize good organizational skills.  As stated earlier, appropriate behavior is expected at all times.

Homework

Homework for the day is always written on the board for the students to copy into their student planner. It is their responsibility to write it daily and take home the needed materials to complete it. The homework will also be posted on our classroom websites which can be found on the school website, www.stpeterjc.org. First click on the “About Us” tab and then the “Faculty” page. Find Mrs. Zumwalt and click on the webpage link. You can also save the URL below which will take you straight to the webpage:

All homework assigned is due in the classroom at the start of class (unless otherwise specified) on the date designated by the teacher. This is true whether it is a written or on-line assignment. In sixth grade students get one "oops" for each subject for the year. If the work is not complete a green slip will be given (once "oops" has already been used). The green slip MUST then be signed by a parent and returned the next day with the completed assignment. Once a green slip is issued, Mr. Veit will notify parents/guardians through email.

ABSENT WORK

If a student has an unscheduled absence it is his/her responsibility to check in with each teacher to clarify work missed during absence (even if a homework sheet was sent home).

If a student has a scheduled absence it is his/her responsibility to meet with each teacher PRIOR to the absence to get work so it can be turned in immediately upon returning to school.

  GOOGLE CLASSROOM

All of your child's teachers will be using Google Classroom for many assignments. Students will find these assignments, projects guidelines, and notes in the Google Classroom set up for each subject. Please note not ALL work will be completed through this manner.

SCHEDULES

Students will be given two copies of their class schedule during the first week of school. One will remain at school and one will be kept at home.

SPELLING

We have Spelling class three times a week. On the first day, we will assign new words along with an accompanying worksheet packet.. On the second day of Spelling class we may do a game or an activity to reinforce the words for the week. Finally, on the last day of class the worksheet packet and any extra spelling assignment will be due.  The spelling test will also be given on the last spelling class of the week. This test may be given on loose leaf paper or through Google Classroom.

Library

Students should keep library books in their book bags at all times when they are not reading them. This will prevent leaving them at home on Library days.

Morning Procedure

When students enter the classroom they should empty out all needed materials for the day from their backpacks, hang up their backpacks on their designated hooks in the coat closet, have a quiet seat and begin working on a morning activity such as reading or sketching.

Notes

Students will be expected to write notes from the board or smart board in almost every subject. These notes are to be written in a designated section of their notebooks and may be written in pen. Notes may be collected throughout the year to check if the student is showing responsibility for their work and keeping up with the class.

Schedule

A copy of your child’s daily schedule is attached. “MAP” stands for Music, Art, and PE. In 4th grade, the students will attend their MAP class daily from 2:20-3:05.

6Z Rotation - = Music      B = Art     C = PE

Spelling

On Monday of each week, the students will be given a list of 20 words. They are to copy these words on their sheet and then cover and write the words again. They will also be given assignments with their words each week. These assignments will be due before the Friday test over the words.

Walking Field Trips

As part of the registration packet there was a walking field trip form. This form allows us the freedom to take children to the many educational events that surround the Capitol. If time allows, parents will be informed of the trips. Occasionally things do happen on the spur of the moment, but that is pretty rare.
